IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth Returns

Back on the World Stage for America's 250th Birthday

When Gavin composed the score for IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth back in 1999, he could hardly have imagined it would still be moving audiences nearly three decades later. This July 4th, that music is back in the spotlight once again. Disney's landmark Celebrates America broadcast — a 24-hour, multi-platform event airing across Disney+, Hulu, ABC, ESPN, and National Geographic to mark the United States' 250th anniversary, features the IllumiNations score prominently in its promotional campaign. Fans of the beloved EPCOT spectacular will recognise the opening act, Chaos, immediately.

Gavin commented on the news “The incredible optimism around the time of the millennium makes quite a contrast to the world we find ourselves in today, and hopefully the music will bring a flavour of the positivity and togetherness that in some corners of the world has been misplaced."

It's a remarkable full-circle moment. The score was originally recorded with a 71-piece symphony orchestra and 30-voice chorus at Abbey Road Studios, and debuted at EPCOT on 1st October 1999 as part of the Walt Disney World Millennium Celebration. It ran nightly for twenty years before the show closed in September 2019. That the music has never really gone away speaks for itself, it has accompanied ABC's coverage of the new millennium, presidential inaugurations, and election broadcasts over the years, and now carries the emotional weight of one of America's most significant national celebrations. As Disney Dining notes, this score has travelled far beyond the World Showcase Lagoon where it was born, you can read their full feature here.

The July 4th event closes with live fireworks broadcasts from both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort, bringing the Disney Celebrates America initiative, running since Veterans Day 2025to a grand finale.

Gavin's latest project with cellist Caroline Dale, Cloud Chamber, releases their debut album Skylines on 25th September, a record that, much like IllumiNations, sets out to find beauty and connection in an uncertain world. More details are at www.cloudchamber.music
